Living Edge

Welcome to the Living Edge newsletter. There's been lots of great changes at Humanity for Horses over the past few months and this new format for our newsletter is one of them. 

For those new to Humanity for Horses, we are a non-profit located near Duncan on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Since 2015, we have saved almost 650 horses, most on their way to slaughter. At our rescue, we have about 30 horses and two donkeys, some available for adoption, while others are permanent due to health or age.

Transforming the site 

What a transformation over the summer. We received a huge boost with a one-week fundraising campaign that was a big show of support. Thank you to our amazing donors. We were able to transform part of the farm site with truckloads of pit run and hog fuel to keep the mud at bay during the winter rains. A skid spread much of the hog, and our volunteers rolled up their sleeves. We were also honoured when more than 20 military personnel from HMCS Calgary volunteered for a day. Thank you everyone for the hard work. It’s made a world of difference. The first atmospheric river of the season just rolled through and the deep hog is holding up with good footing for the horses. 

Cruz's transformation

It’s truly rewarding to witness a horse's transformation. That's what happened with Cruz, who came to us a year and a half ago, emaciated and deeply fearful. No one could touch him. 

The day HMCS Calgary came to volunteer, Cruz put his head over the fence and allowed a crew member to pet his neck. It was a watershed. For some reason, amidst all the hustle and bustle of that day, Cruz decided to trust again. Moments like that make the endless hours worthwhile.

Snazzy outfits

All of the horses have new rain sheets thanks to a campaign spearheaded by Sheena. What a terrific effort and support. Thank you to all those who sponsored a rain sheet for your chosen horse. We hope to run the same campaign soon for the minis. Here, Cassie (left) and Mitchie show off their new gear; blue for the boys, flowers for the girls.

Do you love horses?

Volunteers are always needed. It's guaranteed to be a good workout and very rewarding. To work directly with the horses, we prefer horse experience and you must be comfortable in a herd environment. But there are other ways to help. How about keeping our website updated? (Breederoo is an easy program). Someone savvy with social media is always helpful. It's never a dull moment! Meet Ellie

Ellie is our water girl and a ton of fun. You'll find her playing in kiddie pools, puddles and at any opportunity to swim, she'll jump in. She also tries to be first out when the gate is opened for supper mash. 

Adoptable Ellie is six years old and stands at 12 hands, started under saddle, good for farrier, and good to blanket. Check our website for more information.
